몰랐습니다.
“그는 흥하여야 하겠고, 나는 쇠하여야 하리라”
라고 외쳤던, 세례 요한의 외침의 의미와 깊이를.
인간은 다른 사람이 나를 찾고 필요로 할 때
깊은 만족감과 존재의 의미를 발견합니다.
목회의 소명을 받고 갈림길에 서게 되었습니다.
목회는 역설이기 때문입니다.
목회의 소명은
모든 사람이 일대일로 하나님을 만나도록 돕는 일입니다.
그런데 만약 정말로 이 일이 일어나게 되면,
목회자는 필요 없는 존재가 되고 마는 것입니다.
성도들이 목사에게 의존하고 있다면, 목회를 못하는 것이고
알아서 잘하고 있다면, 목회를 잘하고 있는 것입니다.
이런 의미에서 목회를 가장 잘한 사람은
세례 요한이란 생각이 듭니다.
그의 외침과 사역 덕분에
모든 사람들이 예수를 따라갔습니다.
그리고 그는 더 이상 필요 없는 존재가 되어 버렸습니다.
그러나 그는 외쳤습니다.
“그는 흥하여야 하겠고, 나는 쇠하여야 하리라.”
슬프고 서운한 기색 없이, 기쁨이 충만한 어조로 말입니다.
아직도 모르겠습니다.
갈 길이 아주 멀게만 느껴집니다.
조심스럽게 두 손을 모으고 역설적인 기도를 드립니다.
“예수는 흥하고, 나는 쇠하게 하소서”라고 말입니다.

I didn’t know.
The true meaning and depth
of John the Baptist’s cry:
“He must increase, I must decrease.”
We, as humans,
find meaning and fulfillment
when others need us and depend on us.
But the call to ministry
placed me at a strange crossroads—
for ministry is a paradox.
The pastoral calling
is to help every person
meet God personally,
face to face.
And if that truly happens,
the pastor is no longer needed.
If the people rely on me,
perhaps I’ve failed in my ministry.
But if they walk faithfully on their own,
perhaps I have done it well.
In this light,
John the Baptist may be
the most fruitful pastor of all.
Because of his ministry,
everyone followed Jesus.
And John faded from the scene—
his mission complete.
Yet he proclaimed,
without any sadness,
but with fullness of joy:
“He must increase, I must decrease.”
I don't know still.
The road ahead feels long,
and unclear.
So I bring my hands together,
and whisper this paradoxical prayer:
“May Jesus increase, may I decrease.”
Abide
